THE DANGERS OF PLUMPING

The latest, dangerous craze your kids could be participating in is called “Plumping”. Read this article then sit down and talk to your kids about why they shouldn’t be doing this.

In the past 24 hours, the “Kylie Jenner Challenge” to plump up your lips has blown up online. Teens put their mouths into a small glass and suck as hard as they can, causing their lips to temporarily swell up. And then, it’s time to take a selfie.

The lip suction trend has medical professionals very concerned. Experts say creating a self-mouth tourniquet for your lips can be very dangerous. Getting a pillowy pout is the latest craze on social media and inspired by reality-star-turned-model Kylie Jenner. Engorged lips, whether it be a joke or desired, inspired Serenity Dewey to do it.

Dewey took a selfie moments before she puckered up to a plastic cap. Then she used the cap as a suction device for 10 minutes. But she soon realized it had an alarming result. “I started to feel pain at first and it was, like, throbbing, but then it went away,” she said. “My mom was, like, freaking out, like, ‘what’s wrong with your lips?'” she said.

The St. Mary’s Catholic High School sophomore says at first she thought it was funny but quickly became concerned. “This morning when I woke up I realized there was a big circle around my lips so I was like, wow,” said Dewey.

Her parents wanted her to be a voice for other teenagers to warn them about the dangers of this so-called challenge that’s gone viral. And surgeons are doing the same. “All the little details of your lips are being stretched out; you’re breaking capillaries,” said Dr. Remus Repta with Advanced Aesthetic Associates.

Dr. Repta says lip suctioning can actually change the architecture of the lips, cause deflation and even permanent disfigurement. Dewey says the only challenge here is hoping others realize just how dangerous this form of lip plumping can be. “People do it to make fun of Kylie Jenner and how big her lips are, and so doing this and realizing it thins your lips it isn’t funny anymore,” she said.

Dr. Repta says there are many different ways you can have your lips augmented professionally and safely. For more information, visit www.aaaplasticsurgery.com.
