NATIONAL PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE DAY

Back in the day we used to all recite the Pledge of Allegiance in our classrooms. Our teacher would ask us to stand, put our hand over our heart and recite the words that older Americans can probably still remember today. Your kids…eh…not so much. But have you ever stopped to think what the words of the pledge really mean? This old clip of a comedian/actor named Red Skelton is one of the best explanation of the Pledge you’ll ever hear. The Pledge is thought to have been written to honor the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America in 1892. It wasn’t officially recognized by Congress until December 28th, 1945. There have been some minor changes to the phrasing over the years. The phrase “under God” was added to the Pledge in 1954.
