Eastern Illinois takes first game of series at Arkansas State

Jonesboro, AR – Contributed – Arkansas State (3-2, 0-0 SBC) was unable to overcome Eastern Illinois (4-1, 0-0 OVC) in the first game of the series Friday afternoon, falling 3-2 at Slayton Family Field at Tomlinson Stadium.

The Red Wolves scored in the first inning, with Evan Griffis sending Ashton Quiller home on a sac fly to right field to score first. In the second inning, A-State loaded the bases on a pair of hits and an error, leading to Quiller drawing an RBI-walk for the 2-0 lead.

Chase Richter pitched 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts, giving up one run in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Tyler Weimer took over on the mound for Arkansas State, tossing 3.0 innings and sitting down five batters on strikeouts. Weimer only allowed one hit, with Ryan Ashford and Cooper Garrison combining for the final 1.2 innings, both striking out one batter and neither letting any batters on base.

Quiller and Cross Jumper both recorded two hits, with Quiller logging two doubles for the Red Wolves.
