Jonesboro, AR – Contributed – The City of Jonesboro has been awarded a $42,358 grant through the Patrick Leahy Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program granted by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The funding supports the purchase of 38 new Armor Express Raven 2.0 tactical SWAT carrier systems for officers of the Jonesboro Police Department (JPD).

The investment reinforces the City’s ongoing commitment to public safety by ensuring officers are outfitted with advanced protective equipment while serving residents and visitors of Jonesboro.

JPD was among the first law enforcement agencies in the nation to deploy the innovative three-piece vest system for daily use. The Armor Express Raven 2.0 carrier system offers a lighter and stronger alternative to traditional vests while also providing a critical safety advantage, as the vest can be removed more quickly and efficiently if an officer is wounded in the line of duty.

City leaders say the grant funding helps strengthen public safety efforts while reducing financial pressure on the City’s general budget.

“Protecting the men and women who protect and serve our community is a priority,” said Mayor Harold Copenhaver. “This federal funding allows us to continue equipping our officers with some of the most advanced safety equipment available while also being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.”

The grant was secured through the City of Jonesboro Grants Department, which continues to pursue outside funding opportunities that support essential city services and infrastructure improvements.

“These federal grants are vital in helping underfunded cities acquire essential equipment. Jonesboro is fortunate to receive both state and federal funding that supplements the budget. The Grants Department works closely with city departments to identify needs, pursue funding opportunities, and secure resources that benefit the community,” said Grants and Community Development Director Chris Richey.

JPD Chief Rick Elliott added, “This year’s grant was heavily focused on obtaining or upgrading technology items. This type of equipment must be replaced or upgraded pretty frequently to ensure function at the highest capacity is possible to undertake essential activities. The Jonesboro Police Department continues to prioritize officer readiness, safety, and innovation as part of its mission to serve and protect the community.”
