Stephenville, TX – (Contributed) – Arkansas State women’s basketball (1-1, 0-0 SBC) followed closely behind Tarleton State (1-1, 0-0 WAC) through regulation, but exploded in overtime for the 10-point victory, 87-77.
Crislyn Rose went 10-for-20 on the day, with three of her four triples landing, leading the team with 26 points, making back-to-back games with 20-plus points, making her the seventh A-State player since 2015 to achieve that.
Zyion Shannon and Marlie Dickerson also finished with double digits, 14 and 10, respectively. Tarleton State’s Shada Brackens led the Texans with 20.
A-State shot 41.1 percent (30-73) from the floor, nailing 10-of-28 (35.7 percent) beyond the arc. Tarleton State shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) on the night, 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from 3-point range.
The Texans totaled 29 turnovers, 13 more than the Red Wolves’ 16 and A-State had a 21-9 advantage in points off turnovers. Ball State controlled the boards 52-39, but A-State had a 14-7 on the offensive glass.
Tarleton State took an early lead, creating a 10-4 lead, but an 8-0 run with back to back steals shifted the game back to alternating one-score leads through the first quarter.
The back-and-forth scoring continued, with the Red Wolves hitting their foul limit early, giving the Texans plenty of opportunities at the free throw line. The Red Wolves countered beyond the arc with threes from Rose and Allen, leaving A-State trailing by three at halftime, 37-40.
The Texans maintained the lead throughout the second half, with the Red Wolves’ efficiency falling to just 30 percent in the final 20 minutes. TSU held a 55-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The five-point lead was maintained all the way into the final minute, with a driving layup by Rose and a pair of missed free throws leading to the Red Wolves storing down the court to find Mia Tarver wide open in the corner to bury the tying three with just 12.7 seconds left. A-State’s half court defense held as the Texans’ final shot of regulation fell short of the basket.
Overtime was all Red Wolves, as Shannon stole the ball on TSU’s first possession and landed the ball at the rim. Teams traded free throws and Arkansas State didn’t give up the lead the rest of the game.
Rose pushed the lead to two scores off a fastbreak eurostep layup, followed by a fastbreak Marlie Dickerson layup for the seven point lead. The final nail in the coffin was a Rose three as the clock ticked under a minute with the Red Wolves maintaining the 10 point lead to the final buzzer.
